INTRODUCTION
A.      Background
English is an international language. It has an important position in the world communication today. This position makes English is most widely used all over the world in all aspect of human lives. In Indonesia, English plays an important role in the international communication and development of education. Indonesia as a developing country gets to involve in many aspects of international lives and it cannot be denied that the mastery of English is necessary for Indonesian people. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language which
functions to support the development of knowledge, technology, culture and art. It also improves a close relationship with the other countries.
The main goal of teaching English in Indonesia is to enable students to use English for communication and for reading book reference written in English. English has been taught at the senior high school and event at the elementary school. At the senior and junior high school, the four skills of language namely speaking, writing, listening and reading has been taught. But in this sense the writer will be focus to discuss about reading skill. Reading is the priority because reading can cover the three other skills.
Reading, which belongs to receptive skill, can be defined as a process whereby one looks at and understands what has been written (Williams, 1999: 2). It means that, when someone reads, he looks at something written and tries to get the meaning to understand it. Reading can also be described as a mental or cognitive process which involves a reader in trying to follow and respond to a message from a writer, who is in distant space and time (Davies, 1973: 1). INTRODUCTION

A.    Background
English is one of the human languages in the world that has important role in communication. It has become international language and almost practiced in all part of life, especially in this global era that has full of competition and English becomes one of determiners and assessments of the competition. So that it is important for us to learn the language. It is similar to the statement that English has dispersed and diversified, has been adopted and adapted as an international means of communication by communities all over the
globe.
There are four skills that we have already known in English, namely writing, speaking, reading and listening. Later, the skills should be taught better to master and get complete thought about English itself because each skill has general or specific function in communicating. But we cannot deny that speaking is the most important one for asking information and conversely for delivering information, speaking is the direct system of communication
Speaking is making the use of words in an ordinary voice, offering words, knowing and being able to use a language expressing one-self in words, and making speech (Hornby 1973 : 45). Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. However, today’s world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students’ communicative skills because students can express themselves and learn how to use a language.
Nowadays, many teachers agree that students should learn to speak the second language by interacting to others.  For this case, students should master several speaking components’, such as:???????????

A.      THE BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH
Today in the globalization era, science and technology in the world has grown rapidly in any area of life. Even, we can communicate with others in distance place easily and get nearly all sort of information from all over the world because of the sophisticated technology. To comprehend what has been communicated or informed, we should have good command of the language involved. However, every country all over the world has their own language and rules that differ from one to another. It occurs for all elements of languages: grammar, phonology and semantics. To overcome the problem arising from the various languages, translation
has a very important role.
Translation will be very important thing to do if we get much information which is written in foreign language. Translation can open the information that early people knew nothing. Even, translation can omit the partition between countries, and means of cooperation, understanding and peace in the world. In addition, in the modern century people  demand to be able to follow the development of the era.
Along with the growing need of the books from some fields such as science, technology, literature, etc, our country had  been flooded with foreign books, whether they are gifts, donations, or imported goods. Those books varied in language and form, range from popular knowledge text books to novels. There has been pro and contra about whether  Indonesian publishers need to translate  those books into our own language or??????

A.   Background
 Language as the tool of communication has an important role to reveal an intention to someone else. People will be able to express their thought and feeling by using language. Language, communication and life can not be separated. Language can be applied in many aspects, such as: education, society, politics, economics, and culture. One of the ways in communication is through speaking.
Speaking is one of the important and essential skills that must be practised to communicate orally. By
speaking people are able to know what kinds of situations the world. People who have ability in speaking will be better in sending and receiving information or message to another. Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non verbal symbol in various contexts.
According to Stevick (1982: 103) speaking refers to the gap between linguistic expertise and teaching methodology. Linguistic expertise concerns with language structure and language content. Teaching speaking is not like listening, reading, and writing. It needs habit formation because it is a real communication. The speaking needs to be practiced as often as?????

INTRODUCTION

This chapter describes the background, problem statement, the objective of the research, the significance of the research, and the scope of the research.

A. Background

Vocabulary is a key to master English because by mastering vocabulary, it is easier for students to understand English. In other words, most of text books are written in English, Alwasilah in Maryam (2003: 1) point out that at least 60% of scientific books are written in English, while the people who can read and understand English are still limit, if  they don’t master vocabulary. In order to master English, the elements of
language skills such as grammatical structure, vocabulary, and sound system must be taught to the students as the prerequisite knowledge toward the English language use and skills because language is characterized by these elements.
 On of the element of English involve in the language skills is vocabulary. Vocabulary is only needed to convey what one wish to say that is organized by Grammar. The ability to communicate and to convey our social needs could not establish without having enough vocabulary as Williams(1978:11) acknowledge that:
“We would accept that vocabulary will be initially less important than grammar. The fact is that while without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed, what are normally teach of as vocabulary, item, hours, verbs and adjective do included contain more than a sequence of lexical item with grammatical information other words and yet we have no difficulty in understanding them”.
The reality shows that without vocabulary building, students cannot communicate his or her ideas, emotions, feelings, and desires. It is impossible communication without words. It means that words are?????
