INTRODUCTION

In  this  chapter  the  researcher  presents:  background  of  the  study, formulation  of  the  research  problem,  objective  of  the  research,  hypothesis  of the  study,  significance  of  the  study,  scope  and  limitation  of  the  study, definition of key terms and thesis organization.

A.  Background of the study

English  as  a  language  for  international  communication  is  clearly needed  by  many  learners  to  deliver  through  and  interact  in  a  variety  of situation  through  the  language,  as  for  foreign  travel,  business  or  other professional reason. In Indonesia, English is one of international languages which take a widest range of using (Zaenuri, 2001:24). English is used for news  and  information  or  advertisement  in  newspapers,  radio,  and television.  Therefore,  English  is  regarded  as  the  first  foreign  language   taught in school, from the Elementary school to the university. 

The  function  of  teaching  English  at  Elementary  based  on Kurikulum Muatan Lokal is as a tool for self-expression in understanding and  using  English  so  that  the  students  may  become  clever  and  skilled citizens  who  are  not  isolated  from  the  environment  (Departemen pendidikan dan kebudayaan, 1994:29). Therefore, students are taught how to speak, read, listen and write in English. A.    BACKGROUND

English is an international language. In facing the free market era its role will be more seriously felt. The era is known as a mega-competition, in which competitors have to possess the pre-requirement of being able to use English as communication means. It is the striving for understanding all aspects of global existence through information exchange. We cannot keep the science development and global technology development in balance, without the mastery of English. There are some books, some recent researchers, some new articles, some written mass medias, and some other information in website, that are commonly presented in English. Thus, the English mastery is more helpful to the process of knowledge acquisition, especially in the field of education to promote its quality.

English has been adopted as a major from junior high school stage to the university stage. It is expected that the students obtain the English communication skills. English communication skills are required to aid the knowledge and technology development, culture and art development, and the escalation of international relationship (Depdikbud, 1994). These skills are reading skill, listening skill, speaking skill, and writing skills that are treated in integrated teaching learning model. The other grammatical units such as????

A.    Background

Teaching English in our country has been developed extensively because English is an international language in the world. Therefore, Indonesian government has brought it as a local since at the elementary school. In teaching English vocabulary as an element or language is considered as the most important factor in increasing the mastered if the students are still lacking of vocabulary. Vocabulary is a part of language learning that need continuing growth and development by both native and non native speakers long after grammar and pronunciation elementary school until senior high Scholl. In language teaching preparation program in our country, more and attention being given to improve some technique for teaching vocabulary.

Learning vocabulary as a foreign language seems easy but some students feel fear. The teacher of English should find out solution by crating efficient and effective technique of teaching in teaching English vocabulary, besides that, the teachers should establish condition which makes teaching vocabulary possible. The learning will occur within reasonable period of time.

Realizing how important the vocabulary and how difficult students to build up the teachers of English have provided students with rich exciting exercise which are expected to help vocabulary mush be very helpful to improve the students’ ability in English communication. Allen (1997:149) says that vocabulary is very important in a language, when we learn a language like English; we learn the words of language. Students must continue to learn words as they learn structure as they practice the target language. The vocabulary is needed very to ?????

A.    Background

           The need for english nowdays is increasingly felt in almost every face of life in our country, indonesia. We can not deny that the matery of english is quite necessary for indonesian people. Because it is use as communication tool.

Jacobs. G (2008: 1) states that writing is is one of the language skills that palys an important role in human communication. The most important of writing is coming to be more and more recognized. It is the written mark that links with the outside world is formed.

            There is no doubt that English writing is important as the other language skills. The ability to write is frequently demanded in many occusions in our life. For any reasons writing skill is crusial to most people. In relation about that, Adelstain and Vipal (1980) state that  in all subyects in our life or in all profession, the

ability to write or express oneself clearly is essential basic for success. Writing is crucial mean of human communication. It use to communicate with other people in sociaty and to express our feeling and opinions. Writing means of both communication and self expression.

            Writing means how to communicates our opinion to other on the paper. But reality shows that it can not be done well because it is very difficult to express. Furthermore, Goldman and Heaton (1986:126) states that many students still encounter difficulties in writing because it is complex and difficult. In studying English, many students who study in the tertiary level still often make errors in writing though they have learned it for many times, even years.

The difficulty of writing is also caused by the components of writing. Jacobs. G (1981:10) tell that there are five components of writing. The five components are content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics.  They are intergrating related to each other when students producing a good piece of writing. Without having a good mastery of writing components, the students cannot write successfully. Sometimes, when they write the students get difficulties in ???????
