CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A.      Background

In globalization and era information English was one of the foreign languages taught in school considered as the important one in grasping knowledge, science, and technology. Most of the books, mass media and articles use English. Therefore, the student read books in English to increase their knowledge and to be more aware of technology development. The English language consists of four skills listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The four language skills were supported by grammar and vocabulary. Those skills were related each other so it should be taught as effective as possible.

The four English language skills were important improved. But this research focused in

improving writing skills, because the researcher had done P2K and observation at SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar. The researcher saw many students still poor and weak in writing skills. So the researcher took writing as the research. Writing as one of the English language skills has an important role not only in a formal situation, but also in informal one. Sometimes people cannot verbalize their opinions, ideas or feeling orally, but they can express them through writing. People may write in lecture, seminar, or in private study and also complete their study. People, especially who live in different regions in time and space, should write to transmit their ideas to other people. The other reason why people need to write is that writing can help to sort out and organize the writer random thought, clarify, what they think, develop their idea to make other people understand easily. Writing can be a process of self discovery about who we are and what we think.

The technique of teaching was necessary to develop the students’ skills especially in improving the students’ writing proficiency. Because the technique of teaching influenced the students’ success, so the teacher of English should select the suitable method or technique to teach the students.

 One of effectives technique that was used by the teacher was Career Exploration Technique where it was affords as a systematic procedure by the teacher could guide the students to write. Career exploration is an activity, guide, and counseling to assist students make decisions about choosing their future professions, and how to get jobs in their chosen fields (Kelly, 2010). The teacher could guide students to express and write down their ideas in choosing a job in the future. 

Based on the information above, the researcher conducted a research to find out whether the Career exploration technique was effective to improve the students’ writing proficiency of ??????//   ???????????

Writing Narrative Text Through Writing Marathon Technique

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A.      Background

Writing is important way in communication for human life because it is one of the language skills. By writing skill, someone is asked to be clearly formed of writing in order to the communication will be easier to be understood. The importance of writing for human life is the same as the importance in school environment.

Writing is needed in school environment not only as tool for transferring the  knowledge from teacher to the students and student with students but also as one of  English skills that should be learned by students, besides others skill like reading, speaking and listening.

As one skill of English, writing can  help students to learn and develop their English by expressing

their knowledge, experience and so on. It can be expressed in form of essay a paragraph, a letter, a short story and etc.

In respect to the writing ability, students should know their purpose in writing. When we asked about why they writing, students often say that they write because their teacher asked them and they need to do in the course. Carino (1990:5) explains that the reasons of a writer to write to provide information, to display knowledge, to entertain, to construct or persuade as audience and to ask for something.

Nowadays, English has been studied in all level of school but not all of students like the method which is given by their teachers. In fact, learning English which the same teaching technique sometimes make the students bored. Especially in writing, sometimes students are lack of vocabularies so that it can be obstruction to do that. However, we need the technique which can encourage the creativity and a sense of writing. The students need too the conducive to invite their brain to thinking and we now many tools that the students can use to increase creative ideas in learning English, especially in writing activity.

 The students sometimes could not write their task with many reasons.  Many aspect make the students could not write such as the students do not know how to start the writing, they do not have enough ideas to write, and  could not generate their ideas, probably they understood what should they do but they could not make it. Many students become anxious when they attempt to write. Some get panicly at the sight of the blank pages and say they have writing phobia.

 To solve problem above, the researcher would use Writing Marathon Technique to improve the students writing ability in case of narrative text. It  could help the students to express their ideas or opinions in the written form because sometimes they were blocked by limiting ideas. Reading Comprehension through Herringbone Technique

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

Now days, the progress of knowledge, science and technology required us to absorb information. Information is merely the most important aspect of our life. Book, magazine, newspaper, bulletin, internet i.e. are source of information we can get if only through reading. Thus, we must read thousands of books to avoid ourselves from out of date.

Reading is one of the most important skills we need in increasing our personal welfare and social progress. It is cannot be denied that language is an integral part of human life and society. It is used to communication. In order to express argument or opinion to one another. Without language we cannot develop our education, society tradition and culture, spread global information etc. Shortly, we cannot do anything without using the language. (Rani Nur 2003:4).

In our education system, specially in English teaching. It has made the mastery of all language skills. English as an international language in Indonesia is the first foreign language tough from elementary school up to university. This proves that English subject is important for the Indonesia students.

In teaching English as foreign language. It is necessary to note that there are four skills to be mastered which cover, reading, speaking, listening and writing. Among the four skills, reading gets greather attention to analyze than other. As De Boer (1982: 166) states that “one of the best important ways of learning however is through reading, success in school and in life depends in large pat on your ability read”.

In general, people intend to be able to read and understand English text because many scientific books are written in English. Until now, most of the students still encounter difficulties in reading.

This problem faced by many lecturer and students who are not fluent in English. One of the difficulties encountered by the students is how to remember what they have read. But rapid reading is not necessarily good reading. It is important to realize that we need to vary reading rate according to our intention in reading and the students cannot find main idea what they after read.

Using Herringbone technique is one of the most important technique to improve the reading comprehension. Because some technique have used in teaching  learning  process in teaching English. But sometime with method not fine development for student and  seldom not be success.
