INTRODUCTION
English, nowadays, has become an international language that is taught in almost all  level  of  education  in  Indonesia.  People  realize  that  learning  English  is  very important to compete in  this modern era. English teaching  and learning is aimed to improve students’ ability in using English as a means of communication. English as a means of communication has four basic language skills, i.e. listening, speaking,  reading,  and  writing.  Those  four  skills  are  also  classified  into  oral  and written  means  of  communication.  The  students  have  to  master  all  the communication  skills  in order  to  communicate  effectively.  In  the  reality,  the students have different achievement in those language skills. Some students have better  achievement  in  a  certain  skill  whereas  other  students  are  better  in  other skill. 
There  are  many  factors  which  can  influence  the  students  achievement  of  certain language  skills.  It  might  be  caused  by  the  teacher  and  the  students.  From  the teacher’s point of view, there are some factors  which can???????

A. Background of the Study
One of the aims of learning English as a foreign language is to be able  to  communicate. In conducting  communication  human  should  be polite to other people. Here the conduct communication politely speakers should use the politeness strategy. Politeness strategy is a matter of human to communicate each other. Human communication uses a method to make the  hearers  or  speakers  feel comfortable  to communicate. In conducting communication the speaker should know the attitude who we are speaking with.
This  research has purpose to  discuss  about  using face  threatening acts strategies in daily communication based Brown and Levinson in order to  enter  into  social  relationships,  we have  to  acknowledge  and  show awareness of the face, and human needs to satisfy with addressee. Here, if we  can’t  satisfy  so,  we  do  face  threatening  acts  or  FTA. In  other  words, face  refers  to  other  human’s  desire.  There  are  two  varieties  of  face; positive face and negative face. Positive face is the desire to have what we want  to  be  admired  by  others  and negative  face  is  our  wish  not  to  be imposed on by others.
While Goffman states that positive face and negative face, positive face  is  the  need  to  be  appreciated  and  negative  face  is  the  need  not  to be disturbed. Renkema  (1993:13)  further  mentions  that negative  face  is

In  this  chapter  the  researcher  serves  six  topics  related  to  the  research. those  topics  cover  background  of  the  research,  statement  of  research  problem, objectives  of  the  study,  significance  of  the  research,  scope  and  limitation  of  the study, and definition of key terms.
A.  Background of The Research
Language is a primary tool in communication among human being in a community.  Larsen  (2003:  2)  states  that  language  is  a  means  of  interaction between  and  among  people.  Here, language  has  function  as  tool  which connects  them  with  surrounding.  In  the  community,  people  realize  that without language they cannot interact to each other.  Language can become a bridge that connect one another, even connect one another that live in different places.  By  using  a  language  someone  can  gain  information,  knowledge, moreover expressing feeling, and emotions. Nowadays, many people learn the international languages. One of the international languages is English. 
English  is  an  international  language  which  has  an  important  role  to interact with other people in the world. INTRODUCTION
According  Widowson  (1994),  speaking  is  the  active  production  skill  and  use  of oral  production.  Rivers  (1981:  161)  explains  that  students  study  a  foreign language  in  high  school  with  strong  conviction  that  language  means  something spoken.  The  students  are  often  discouraged  and  lose  interest  when  they  find  that foreign language study is just like other subjects, learning the book only  without any practice. That some problem that faced by students in school. Referring to the description  above,  information  gap  technique  was  an  appropriate  to  solve  theproblem and increase the students’ speaking ability. Information gap is one of the tasks  that  may  encourage  the  students  more  actively  to  speak  English  because  it provides  more  opportunity  for  students  to  talk  in  order  to  complete  their information.  Theoretically,  Pica  and  Doughty  (1986)  state  that  information  gap tasks  cope  the  students  to  talk  more  with  a  number  of  communication  strategies used.  Information  gap  is  the  activity  in  which  the  students  are  given  different information.  By  sharing  the  separate  information  they  can  complete  a  task.  The researcher  tried  to  find  out  the  better  patternfor  information  gap  in  order  to encourage  students  to  talk.Meanwhile,  the  context  material  of  the  teaching learning was understanding and using transactional dialogue in short conversation. A.    Background of the Research
Language is important in our daily communication. People communicate with other or express their feelings, by using language. In Oxford Learner’s pocket Dictionary (2004: 240), language issystem of sound, word etc used by humans to communicate thought and feelings. It means that language is very important for communication in our daily life. And language is one of the instrument of communication. Language is a means of communication. By using language, people can express ideas, thoughts, opinions and their minds. Language in the world is the most important means in life because it is impossible for people to communicate with other and carry on their daily activities without using language. Among those language, English is one of the international languages. As international language, English has many imporant roles.
Recently, English has been becoming number one topic that is being talked by scientist. It is because, almost every person in this earth needs to study English. Learning English is very important. English is essential for education advancement or career development and for interaction with people in other countries. Besides, English is also used to develop science, technology and culture. Based on the national education system, there are four skills which must be acquired by students in learning English, they are reading, listening, speaking and writing. Furthermore, English also has three components that are vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.  Among the four basic skills, reading is one of the most important skills in learning language because the success of their learning depends on the greater part of their ability to read. Reading is construction of meaning from a printed or written message. The construction of meaning involves the reader connecting information from the written message with previous knowledge to arrive at meaning at an understanding. Besides, the issue on the importance of study within context, then support the importance of improving students’ reading skill.
