INTRODUCTION

 A.  Background of Study 

People as a part of social life can not be separated from their community. Language  has  an  essential  role  as  a  media  for  communication.  Hornby  defines language  as  the  system  of  communication  in  speech  and  writing  that  is  used  by people of a particular country. Communication  is  understanding and expressing  information,  ideas,  feeling,  and  improving  knowledge,  technology,  and  culture.

English as an international language enables people all around the world to cope  each others and create harmonious life.  In  Indonesia,  English  is  very  important  and  get  special  attention  to  be  learnt.  English  is  taught  not  only  for  adult  but  also  in  formal  school  such  as  kindergarten,  elementary 

school,  junior  high  school,  senior  high  school  and  vocational  school.  The  main  aim  of  teaching  English  is  to  make  it  as  an  easy  learn language and they can use it as well as Indonesian.

Indonesian  learners  who  want  to  be  master  of  English  should  learn  and  comprehend  all  aspects.  There  are  four  major  skills  such  as  listening  and speaking, reading and writing. Writing is one way to communicate in English by  expressing  the  ideas  through  organizing  our  thought  into  good  arrangement  of  written  text.  Olshtain  stated  that  viewing  writing  as  an  act  of  communication suggests  an  interactive  process  which  takes  place  between  the  writer  and  the  reader via text.

According  to  the  statement  above,  it  is  said  that  written  text  is  able  to present  an  act  of  communication  which  can  be  easily  understood  and  involved the  writer  and  the  readers.  Writing  skill  should  be  taught  in  order  to  produce  a high quality written text which can convey the content through  informal  literacy such  as  short  functional  text,  monologue,  and  essay  in  the  form  of  procedure,

A. Background of the Study

English is an international language. It is used all over the world. For that reason, it is important for people to master English orally and in writing, in order to be able to communicate and socialize with the world community.

English is the first foreign language taught at every school in Indonesia. The Indonesian government chooses English as the first foreign language to be taught in schools and as a major subject for the students from elementary school to university students, they realize how important English in their life, so the intend to master it, in such as way that they can use that language to communicate with other people in the world.

Students must master four language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Based on the concept and function, English has the purpose to develop those four skills and also the language components: vocabulary, structure and pronunciation (in speech) or spelling (in writing) which supports students mastering well. In mastering English, students find problems dealing with language skills and language components as mentioned above. Most students in Indonesia consider English as a difficult subject which makes them frustrated. Many of them failed to graduate from SMP / SMA only because of their mark of

A. Background of The Study

In Indonesia English is the first foreign language. As an international language, English spreads all over the world.3 It can be proved by designing English curriculum in the whole levels of Indonesian education institutions, from elementary, junior high school, senior high school and finally in university. As the first foreign language in Indonesian schools, English becomes one of school subjects. It has done by the teacher and students in many class activities. To master a foreign language, students should know the

language components such as vocabulary, phonology, and structure or grammar. However, English is not our own language; everyone will feel that it is difficult. In junior high school, students learn the four language skills. That is clearly stated in the goals of the curriculum 2004 as following the objectives of English teaching in Junior high school. It is to enable the students to develop English skills, especially in grammar.4

Teaching grammar has often been regarded as a structure base on formal activities. After relating it with several sources and techniques, which are mainly based on communicative activities, the teaching of grammar gained a new insight. In the teaching of grammar, the techniques of resource combinations are often modified to structure discourse match and they are well developed, they can be used effectively for all phases of a grammar lesson. In order to make a grammar lesson more effective, beneficial, and interesting a teacher should use some well developed and fascinating techniques in the classroom. Language is a system for the expression of meaning. Its primary function is for interaction and communication.2 Language is used by human in order to know and understand each other. As we know that God created human in different condition and character, so they need to interact among people.

As a foreign language in Indonesia, English is learned seriously by many people to have a good prospect in the community of international world. Recently, English becomes important. Since it’s important, English is taught widely at formal school starting from elementary school up to universities; even at informal

school i.e. courses.

There are four skills in learning English they are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Speaking is very important because speaking and human being cannot be separated from each other. Speaking is used to express their ideas and to communicate to people in civilized world.

Speaking seems intuitively the most important skill to master. The success is measured in terms of the ability to carry out conversation in language speaking in an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, and processing information. Speaking is very important because by mastering speaking skill, people can carry out conversations with others, give the ideas and exchange the information with others.

In speaking, students should master the elements of speaking, such as vocabularies, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. As a foreign learner in Indonesia, many students have amount vocabularies and mastering?????????

There are many kinds of language in our life. Nowadays, English has become a very powerful language in the world. As one of international language, most communities in the world use English in

As the most important foreign language in Indonesia, English is one of the compulsory subjects taught in Junior High School (SMP), Senior High School (SMA), university, and now days English also is taught in Elementary school and even in the kindergarten.
