1.1 Background of the Study

We never stop learning language-from the babbling of babies to the vicarious preschool years, from our early encounters with print and our first attempts at writing through to the secondary textbooks and then beyond to the new demands of the adulthood, where we still continue to learn and refine the language needed in every new situation in which we find ourselves. (Derewianka, 1990:3) People use language to express their mind, wishes, and ideas. Language is a means of communication people use to share ideas with others. Language predicts attitude and wishes of the users. Ramelan (1992:14) says:   “…the use of language enables the members of a social group to cooperate with one another for their own benefits. Language has to

be learned and  used in a social community, without which the existence of language is beyond understanding.”  

Language is not only used for daily conversation but  also used in education, research and science both  spoken and written. Considering those functions of language, people study language both formal or in class and informal or outside the class.   English is one of the widely used international languages. Both as a means of oral and written communication, including the broadcasting and the writing of newspaper, magazine and technological as well as scientific books. Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension through Keyword Method

INTRODUCTION

A.    Background

Nowadays, science and technology development demands people to increase their knowledge and experience. One way to increase their knowledge and experience is through reading. Reading is the effective way to get information. If someone says the book is the window of the world, we can say that reading is the eye of the world because we can know all the things through reading. Reading is one of the basic skills of English, but it has a very complex process where the reader tries to discover meaning in print page or script. Through reading one can enhance his experiences,develop new concept and increase his thinking or knowledge.

Reading is one of the basic communicative skills of English.  It is an important part of English, this is the way of gaining information from written source. Harmer (1991: 68), states that reading is useful for other

purpose; it provides good models for English writing and also provides opportunities to study language. For the reasons it will be important to make the reading activity as effective as possible.

Indonesian curriculum has put English as the essential subject to learn from elementary until university, where reading is one of English skills that the students must master. Besides that in the last examination test of each school level almost 90% of test items are reading test form where the students are asked to find out the information of text. A.    Background

Teaching English in our country has been developing extensively because English function as an international language. Therefore, Indonesia government has brought it into school curriculum from elementary school up to university. English in our education program has become compulsory subject. Start from junior high school up to university. Even today, some elementary schools include this subject as a local content. One important element of language that needs to be developed is speaking.

Speaking is one of the skills in English and plays an important role in learning a foreign language. It can measure the success of people in terms of ability to take conversation in the language. Therefore,

studying English without practice speaking is useless.Usually, the students do not participate actively in speaking, probably because they are lack of knowledge or have no idea toward the subject matter  or discussed. This facts invites the English teachers have to motivate the students to speak.

Base on information from an English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar of the second Grade students especially at the class XI that the students’ achievement in speaking was still low where the students’ value average still got score 4.21, while the standard speaking in curriculum is 6.5. Because the students still lack in use grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and self confidence. In this study, the researcher wants to solve this problem until the students have a go????????????????

A.    Background

Teaching English in our country has been developed extensively because English is an international language in the world. Therefore, Indonesian government has brought it as a local since at the elementary school. In teaching English vocabulary as an element or language is considered as the most important factor in increasing the mastered if the students are still lacking of vocabulary. Vocabulary is a part of language learning that need continuing growth and development by both native and non native speakers long after grammar and pronunciation elementary school until senior high Scholl. In language teaching preparation program in our country, more and attention being given to improve some technique for teaching vocabulary.

Learning vocabulary as a foreign language seems easy but some students feel fear. The teacher of

English should find out solution by crating efficient and effective technique of teaching in teaching English vocabulary, besides that, the teachers should establish condition which makes teaching vocabulary possible. The learning will occur within reasonable period of time.

Realizing how important the vocabulary and how difficult students to build up the teachers of English have provided students with rich exciting exercise which are expected to help vocabulary mush be very helpful to improve the students’ ability in English communication. Allen (1997:149) says that vocabulary???????

A.    Background

           Language is the most important thing for people as a means of communication. It is basically a means of both oral and written communication. People use language to express their ideas and wishes to others’ people such as when they need others help so that close relation among members of the group can be carried. It is important to learn English because it is an international language which is used in many countries over the world and widely used in many sectors such as information, trade, education, etc.

In Indonesia, English has an important role especially in education. Therefore, English is taught as the first foreign language in all levels of schools and language courses. In school, English has been taught as a

local content. Since The Basic Course Outlines of the 2004 Curriculum (2004: 7) in Nurhawaeni states that the objective of learning English at junior high school as a local content is to develop students' communication ability in the context of school. It means that the students are expected to be able to make simple transactional and interpersonal conversation which is potentially needed to communicate in the context of school. Here, the teacher plays important role since he has to be able to set students interest and motivation in learning English in order to develop students’ ability to communicate using all the resources they have already acquired to interact with others about their needs and interest.

In this study, the writer will focus on teaching writing in Junior high school considering that in learning language writing is the skill that students acquire in first to write something. Writing is important to support learning English especially in enriching vocabulary and gaining a large portion of their education. Therefore the writer considers that writing can be taught at junior high schools.

There are four skill should be mastered in learning English; speaking, reading, listening and writing. Writing will provide a basis for development of other language skills.?????????
